Compare the two versions of one line. The weak one reads: responsible for the student newspaper. The strong one reads: ran a team of eight and published the student paper every fortnight for a year. It is the same fact, and only one of them tells your reader anything real about you.

Why the guide keeps your page so plain

The layout half of the guide is short on purpose. One column, ordinary headings, no photo, no sidebar down the edge. It can look unfinished next to a designed template, and that is fine, because the plainness is quietly doing a job for you.
