What Makes a Resume Template ATS Friendly

You are looking for an ATS friendly resume template and every site selling one says theirs is. None of them tells you what the phrase means, so you cannot check.

It means one thing. Your file gets turned back into plain text, and the text has to come out in the right order. That is it. Everything else people sell you under this label is decoration.

What the software actually does with your file

When you apply online, your document is stored and then read. A program pulls the words out and tries to find your name, your employers, your dates and your job titles, so it can put them into fields.

It does that using position — where each letter sits on the page. It does not see your layout the way you do. It sees marks with coordinates, and it reads them roughly left to right, top to bottom.

That single fact explains every rule below. Nothing here is superstition.

The four things that actually break

Two columns. A side column sits on the same lines as your body text, so the reader walks straight across both. Your skills list ends up threaded through your job history, one line at a time.

We widened the gap between the columns in steps, all the way to a full inch and beyond. It still happened. There is no gap that fixes it, because the gap is not what the software is measuring. We deleted both of our two-column designs.

Tables and text boxes. Same problem, same cause. A table can be read column by column instead of row by row, which turns your dates into a list with nothing attached to them.

Headers and footers. Some readers skip them entirely. If your name and phone number live in the header, they can be the only thing missing from your application.

Wide letter spacing on small headings. Stretch the letters in WORK EXPERIENCE far enough and the extractor stops believing they are one word.

What does not break, whatever you have been told

A photo does not break it. We put one in and ran the file through: every field still came out.

There are good reasons not to use a photo when you apply in the US, UK, Canada or Australia, and none of them is technical. It is convention, and hiring bias. Those two get collapsed into "the ATS will reject it", which is not true and sends you the wrong way.

Colour does not break it. Bullet points do not break it. A normal font at a normal size does not break it, and there is no such thing as an ATS-friendly typeface — only fonts the reader has installed and fonts they do not.

So what makes a template ATS friendly

• One column, from top to bottom.
• No tables, no text boxes, no sidebars.
• Your contact details in the body of the page, not in the header.
• Ordinary section headings — Experience, Education, Skills — spelled the ordinary way.
• Real bullet points, not symbols you typed.
• Sent as .docx or PDF, both of which are read fine.

You will notice the list is entirely about what is missing. An ATS friendly resume template is an ordinary one with the dangerous parts left out. That is why it is not a premium feature and nobody should charge you extra for it.

How to check yours in two minutes

Do not trust anybody's badge, including ours. Open your own file, select all the text, copy it, and paste it into a plain notes app.

Read what comes out. Is your name first? Is each job still attached to its dates? Are the section headings intact and spelled normally? Did anything land in the middle of a sentence it does not belong to?

That is roughly what the software sees. If it reads correctly to you as plain text, it will read correctly to the machine, and you can stop worrying about the badge on the template.
